January 15 was a red-letter day for Park Place of Elmhurst. On that day, the entire community – all residents, staff and caregivers – received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19. And now, another red-letter day has arrived: On February 5, the community will receive the second dose of the vaccine to complete the vaccination process.
“What a unique opportunity this is for our community,” says Beth McGowan Welch, Executive Director at Park Place of Elmhurst, a Life Plan Community in the Chicago-area region. “We are thrilled to say that more than 98% of our residents registered to receive the free vaccine. This is truly a great step we are taking to ensure the health and safety of our Park Place community, and our greater community as well.”
The day of the first vaccination dose was, as you can imagine, a celebration of hope and happiness. Balloons welcomed the Walgreens crew (the community partner who administered the vaccine) as well as applause and aplomb. A photographer from Suburban Life was present to interview residents and take pictures. The smiles on residents’ and staff’s faces were clearly visible, even behind their masks!
Following administration of the vaccine, individuals were monitored for 15 minutes.
“This vaccine gives us all hope for the future,” says Beth. “We’re so excited for the second dose of the vaccine and a happier, healthier 2021 for our residents and community!”
